Yoji Yamada (山田 洋次 Yamada Yōji, born September 13, 1931 in Toyonaka City, Osaka, Japan) is a Japanese director best known for his Tora-san series of films. He was born in Osaka. But because of the work of his father, who was an engineer for the South Manchuria Railway, from the age of 2 he was brought up in Manchuria. Following the end of World War II, he came back to Japan and subsequently he lived in Yamagata Prefecture.

After receiving his degree from Tokyo University in 1954, he entered Shochiku and worked under Yoshitaro Nomura as a scriptwriter or as an assistant director. He has won many awards throughout his lengthy career and is well-respected in Japan and by critics throughout the world. He wrote his first screenplay in 1958, and directed his first movie in 1961. Yamada continues to make movies to this day.

This boxset Includes the following five films from director Yoji Yamada (also available individually), in a collector's box: "A Distant Cry from Spring"; "Final Take"; "Home From The Sea"; "The Yellow Handkerchief"; and "The Village".

The Yoji Yamada Collection includes:

Home From The Sea (1972) - 101 min.

On a beautiful island in Seto Inner Sea, Seichi and Minko make their living from transporting rocks to construction sites by boats. They cherish the deepest affection for this piece of land they are attached to and enjoy their simple life there. Rapid industrial development, however, makes it impossible for them to carry on such a living style. They are forced to leave their beloved hometown in search of a brighter future, but with their everlasting longing to return. The story extols people's fondness for their native land and at the same time reflects the cruel social reality in the 1970s. Affectionately directed by Yamada Yoji, the film is considered one of the master- pieces in the history of Japanese cinema.

The Village (1975) - 124 min.

Shuko Kawano, staff of Tokyo's Union Theatre, comes to Matsuo Village in Iwate Province hoping to join hands with the local youth association to put on a musical, "Hometown". Instead of making profits, the theatre aims only at sharing a joyful night with the youngsters in the village. Although Shuko earns the support from TakashI Sato, president of the youth association, huge costs result in fierce opposition from other members. They finally consent to stage the musical when Takashi promises to cover the deficit, but Takashi and Shuko still have to overcome such other problems as unsatisfactory box office performance and absence of suitable venue before they can have their dream come true.

An early and rarely seen masterpiece by the director of the "Tora-San" series and the majestic "The Twilight Samurai", "The Village" is also one of the filmmaker's most cherished films.

The Yellow Handkerchief (1977) - 109 min.

Another heartwarming gem from the creator of the "Tora-San" series, Yoji Yamada. This time around, the story of an ex-murderer on parole trying to make his way home to Hokkaido to meet his wife is handled with poignancy and great sensitivity. Adapted from a short story by the American novelist Peter Hamill, the film was both a huge hit in Japan and a critical success. Unashamedly sentimental, this tragic-comedy represents Yamada at the peak of his creative ability. It also features remarkable performances from every member of its cast: the stoic and Humphrey Bogard-like Ken Takakura, the benevolent Chieko Baisho (Tora-San's young sister), the irresistibly funny Tetsuya Takeda, and the untamable Karoi Momoi. In short, this is one film you cannot afford to miss!

A Distant Cry From Spring(1980) - 123 min.

In the vast expanse of an unforgiving land, Kazami Tamiko, a widow who lives only with her young son, struggles to make a living by running a small dairy farm. Life is harsh, yet pleasurable when she finds a congenial companion, Tajima Kosaku. When Kosaku's mysterious past is finally revealed, Kazami resolves on a radial change...

A ravishingly beautiful film by Yamada Yoji who steeped social realism in his aesthetic sense, and in which the art of both serenity and speech can be fully appreciated. A Distant Cry From Spring features Montreal World Film Festival Best Actor Award winner Takakura Ken, who gives a flawless portrayal as Kosaku; and Baisho Chieko (Home From The Sea and The Village) as Tamiko.

Final Take (1986) - 135 min.

In the early 1930s, when silent movies were being replaced by talkies, Ogura has become famous for making popular flickers and comedies. His young assistant, Kenjiro, despises his practice and wishes to make art films. Ogura finds a pretty candy seller, Koharu, and casts her as a bit player. But as she ruins take after take, she goes home and determines never to become an actress. Kenjiro is later falsely charged with being a communist. He learns in prison that flickers have a genuine appeal to the masses. After release, he returns to the studio and determines to make a flicker, entitled "Floating Weeds". At the same time, famous arthouse director Ogata has succeeded in making an actress out of Koharu. So Kenjiro chooses Koharu as the lead actress when the original female lead elopes with her lover. Production goes smoothly, until the final take...
