Countless nineteenth-century artists fell under the spell of the Orient — an enchanted realm, as they imagined it, of dreams, of colour and warmth, of exotic adventure and passionate sensuality. Orientalism in Russian music, as in other arts and in other countries, had little to do with reality. It was an artistic convention partly inspired by a generalised yearning for a remote ideal, and partly stimulated by the imperialist ideals of the age: it is no coincidence that the wonderful flowering of Russian music that occurred in the mid-nineteenth century was contemporary with the expansion of the Russian Empire southwards and eastwards into the Islamic world.
